If you do YOGA regularly, does that have the same health benefits as aerobics and weight lifting?

My yoga teacher said that yoga oxygenates the blood and builds strength in a healthier way and does the same good as the other types of exercise which he says can be harmful in the long run. Since I hate aerobics and feel so much better with yoga, it seems right to me but not to my traditional %26quot;work-out%26quot; relatives. What are the facts here?|||Yes and no. It%26#039;s definately body sculpting but unless you are doing power yoga, your heart rate will not increase enough to make it aerobic.|||Depends what type of yoga you do.

Ashtanga has definately imprpved my fitness level. Weight training was doing nothing for me, so I stopped when I took on ashtanga a few nights a week. I%26#039;ve now got the muscle definition I always wanted.

I still do seperate cardio, but that%26#039;s mainly because I%26#039;m most desk based for work. Ashtanga does give a heavy cardio work out through both the breathing technique used and the continual fluid motions.|||Yoga has many benefits including spiritual and physical. It as good as aerobics and other exercises in improving health and shedding unwanted fat.It improves mental health and makes you a better person. There are several Yogas i.e.---Hata Yoga, which you are doing. It stresses more on physical side without ignoring spiritual aspect Another is JnanaYoga which stresses on spirituality.Third one is Bhakti Yoga which is about devotion and surrender to God.Lastly RajaYoga which covers material aspects. One should practise all Yogas to become a total man. I tried all types of exercises, was benefited but to my dismay I found that discontinuance brought back fat to body.Lastly I tried Yoga and am sticking to it for the last one year.Result-loss of 8 k.g. in weight and eye power improvement though I am 62.Besides I developed more positive attitude to life.Want to know more about Yoga?Read any book on it and see the disc showing Yoga by Swamy Ramdev of India.|||That depends... how often do you do yoga? If you do yoga every other day of the week, then you%26#039;re looking at a pretty fit body. You won%26#039;t need to supplement it with other exercises. Yoga will increase the heart rate and builds nice long, lean muscles in a way that your body can handle - afterall, it is your body weight.

Yoga, when practised correctly, yoga will do the least amount of harm to the body. If you have any conditions in particular, make sure you inform your instructor. And when in yoga class, please listen to your body. When and if your body is telling you that it%26#039;s in pain, stop and go to child%26#039;s pose. This will prevent your body from hurting itself.

I teach yoga and sometimes I worry that my student%26#039;s egos get in the way of their practise. It%26#039;s not their fault. It%26#039;s the way that we%26#039;ve been conditioned by our society to push ourselves beyond our limits. So, listen attentively to your teacher%26#039;s ques. Listen attentively to your body%26#039;s cues.

Going back to your question... normal aerobic exercises have a tendency to be a bit too hard on the joints and weightlifiting may hurt the ligaments if you over extend yourself.

All that said - I also realize how hard it is to go down to the gym/studio on a daily basis to get your yoga practise in. So, on the days that you don%26#039;t do yoga, you might want to do some running and practise your yogic whispher breath while you%26#039;re doing that.

Hope this helps.|||It REALLY depends on what your regular work out would have consisted of. If it was a mild work out just to keep in shape and you are not trying to build muscle or lose weight, Yoga would be a great alternative!

Yoga is good for those people that are maintaining their weight and current muscle mass. It is also really good for gaining more flexibility.

(*You still have to be careful though; you can hurt yourself just as much doing Yoga as with any other form of exercise, it just may be a different kind of damage, like not impactive but tearing, ouch!)

Those of us that need to build muscle or lose weight would have to couple Yoga with other more traditional forms of exercise.|||There are more benefits with Yoga than any other exercise or sport out there, to many to explain. Long life and healthier living in general like normal blood pressure among other things, really.|||Yoga is a form of strength training but you need to do the other stuff as well|||For good health it is all the way PATANJALI%26#039;s Yoga,which is time tested over centuries. The main difference is that Yoga makes use of relaxation techniques where as in the other methods u get the benefit s by exhausting techniques. PRANAYAMA (Breathing Techniques)is a part of Yoga and gives very good results by just controlling breath. U have different Yogic Asanas to give benefit for different problems.U have no cures for chronic problems like Asthma and diabetics,and problems like back pain in these modern methods where as u have solutions for every problem in Yoga.So u can easily understand the efficacy of Yoga.U should learn from a good teacher who will not introduce his own techniques.U can browse the net for %26#039;yoga%26#039; and also go through some books to get more information.|||your yoga teacher will tellyou anything to keep you paying them for yoga instead of going and getting proper excercise, stretching isnt aerobic saying it is dont make it so - you say yourself you don%26#039;t like aerobics this is because they are actually working and raising your heart rate|||ya, they would say that. they are all effective ways of exercising. i%26#039;ve meet many people that have injured themselves through yoga...so don%26#039;t believe it....it%26#039;s the teacher of the particular fitness class that teaches their pupils properly, not the exercise. proper screening of participants is essential.|||%26quot;Heyam Deham Anagatam%26quot;

This shloka means that the pains yet to come can be avoided by Yoga.

Yoga means union. It is the union of your body, mind, breath and soul. Yoga has 84 lakh asanas, but the beautiful thing is that by knowing just a couple, you can change the way you live.

Aerobics

- Aerobics is a very energetic form of physical activity that increases your heartbeat to about 65% of the maximum rate.

- It keeps the body in motion mainly for the purpose of cardiovascular workout.

- It has a tendency to make the mind restless due to constant motion generating a lack of proper focus on the body.

Yoga

- Yoga exercises the entire body appropriately, including the lungs and the cardiovascular system

- It also steadies the mind for the highly desirable mind-body harmony for a total relaxation.

- Yoga makes the spine supple, strengthens the abdomen, and increases the range of movements of most of the joints by stretching the tendons.

- It also strengthens, concentrates, calms and steadies the mind

- It increases your performance under all conditions of work, study and play.

How can I improve my personal discipline regarding my personal yoga practice?

I%26#039;m trying to run 3 miles per day six days per week. I also would like to incorporate my yoga practice some how, but there%26#039;s not enough hours in the day...|||I totally understand. About a year ago I had finally managed to build a habit of practicing everyday-- then I moved and my whole schedule got thrown out of wack and I%26#039;ve never been able to get back to a daily practice. Here are the things that helped me build a daily practice before....

1) It takes a certain amount of time to build a new habit. In the beginning it is pure discipline that makes you do the desired behavior. Be patient with yourself as you try to build the habit, but accept no excuses. I think my yoga teacher told me that you have to do the same thing something like 20 times to begin to build a new habit.

2) Don%26#039;t worry too much about how much yoga you%26#039;re doing as you try to build the habit of a daily practice. 15 minutes everyday is better than none. On busy days when I really don%26#039;t have much time I just do down dog, standing forward bend, triangle, seated twist, and savasana-- about 10 breaths in everything except savasana. Doing any yoga everyday will help build the habit.

3) Think about all the other things that you have 15 or 30 minutes for... I know for me it%26#039;s easy to find time for a TV show that I like or talking to a friend-- so why shouldn%26#039;t I be able to squeeze in the same amount of time for yoga?

4) You don%26#039;t have to do your yoga all in one sitting. On days that are super busy you can spread your yoga out through the day. Practice a pose or two as time permits throughout the day and finish your day with a savasana when you get home.

Hope this helps. Namaste!|||One of the great things about yoga is the benefits you can take away, even with a short session. Try making it a part of every day, even if it%26#039;s only for 10 minutes. It could be your stretching practice before and after you run.

Once it is part of your daily (or a certain number of days per week) routine, you can try lengthening the time of your yoga practice by thinking of all the positive benefits you%26#039;re receiving.

Good luck, enjoy, and Namaste! :)

How many calories do you burn doing one hour of yoga?

I am talking about light to moderate yoga like at the gym. I know cardio is the ultimate fat buster, its is just a curiosity of mine... I want to know what my hour in a hot smelly room gets me other than an invincible/calm feeling afterwards. Thaaaanks|||You can find calorie calculators online that, when you put in your weight and the amount of time, show you (roughly) how many calories you%26#039;re burning during a variety of activities for that particular amount of time. The best one I%26#039;ve found is at http://www.caloriesperhour.com, but that%26#039;s just because it has the most variety of daily activities. There%26#039;s another one I%26#039;ve found that wasn%26#039;t quite as comprehensive, but I can%26#039;t remember exactly where it was since I don%26#039;t have it bookmarked.

Also, high-impact cardio isn%26#039;t always the best fat-buster. You actually want to do low-impact stuff so that your body doesn%26#039;t go into preservation mode and try to preserve calories. Try doing a workout that will aim for about 55% to 65% of your target heart rate and do it for about 30-45 minutes, and that will burn the maximum amount of calories. Your body is designed to preserve itself, and uses several safeguards to preserve energy when it thinks it%26#039;s going to have to use up a lot for a long time. This essentially %26quot;tricks%26quot; your body into burning the most calories, since it thinks it will have plenty to spare. Best of luck!

Edit: If you really want to know exactly how many calories you spend on any given activity, you can invest in something like the BodyBugg. But those are super-expensive and require paying for the product, the program, and the services of a trainer to go over it all with you for about three months. I would just stick to the rough estimates on the calorie calculators.

Why do some yoga books have a whole bunch of poses and sequences, while others have only a handful?

Are there different types of power yoga? How are hatha, asana, astanga, and asana yoga related? I want a book that includes all of the possible movements. How do these people go about choosing the exercises and poses that they include in their book? Why not just include all of the movements? Can you just take any of the poses and make up your own sequences? Or are there certain ones that need to go together? I can%26#039;t find a satisfying yoga book because I feel like if I choose one, I%26#039;ll be missing out on stuff that might be in other books. Is there a book that contains it all?|||Yoga is a vast science and art.

Sage Patanjali is said to be the father of yoga as he is credited as the one who transcribed what was previously only an oral tradition.

Patanjali%26#039;s %26#039;Yoga Sutras%26#039; is the definitive text of yoga; yet it is not easily understood by someone who is new to yoga as its %26#039;sutras%26#039; are %26#039;threads%26#039; of condensed information and the original language is Sanskrit - a language that attempts to convey wholeness through its vibration.

The %26#039;Yoga Sutras%26#039; does not provide any detailed descriptions of poses; yet it does include a description of Astanga Yoga (the 8 limbs of Yoga) and %26#039;Asana%26#039; or physical postures is the third limb of the 8 limbs.

So Astanga Yoga in its original context comes from the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali; Astanga Yoga has been marketed as %26#039;Power Yoga%26#039; , %26#039;Hot Yoga%26#039; , %26#039;Bikram Yoga%26#039; and a couple of other names by folks who have focused on some of the health benefits available through the practice; the poses they include/exclude (and other aspects of the practice) are determined by sales and marketing.

Hatha Yoga is the union of solar and lunar (male-female) energies that uses poses as its foundatin and like %26#039;Astanga%26#039; it has been presented and marketed under a variety of other names (folks like B K S Iyengar, Kripalvananda, Vishnudevananda/Shivananda and others have particular approaches of Hatha Yoga that are named for them).

In general yoga has two approaches that have been practiced for thousands of years; the one that is more dominant in the North and East of India is more centered on the energy body and is more esoteric in its approach; the other approach is more physical; it is dominant in the South and West of India and it is the approach that has influenced most folks outside of India.

Since Patanjali there have been many great yogis and about 100 years ago T K V Krishnamacharya was considered to be %26#039;the%26#039; yogi of South India. Krishnamacharya had a number of excellent students like Indra Devi, B K S Iyengar, Patthabi Jois, and his son Desichar... each of these now have yoga forms that are named for them in some way or another.

B K S Iyengar%26#039;s book %26#039;Light on Yoga%26#039; is one of the best reference books on yoga; it was written circa 1960 - B K S Iyengar is still living and he has written a number of other yoga books since %26#039;Light on Yoga%26#039; was published.

So %26#039;Light on Yoga %26#039; is a comprehensive work (it includes some 600 photos of yoga poses, their descriptions, and how the poses/practices are grouped) yet newer books by B K S Iyengar and his students make the material more accessible.

Patthabi Jois%26#039; approach to yoga is what others have marketed as %26#039;Astanga Yoga/Power Yoga%26#039; - there are a number of books by his students that describe the different series of poses that he promotes.

It makes you feel good and it will help you reduce. But, there are better ways to lose weight fast. Do the yoga but, if you want a quicker way read this first, if you are older and have not exercised in many years you should see your doctor and have a stress test done ti be sure your heart is ok. If you are young and just want to get fit and/or lose weight, here%26#039;s my Weight Loss Program through聽Body Building and Nutrition. It works! Don%26#039;t Use Diet Pills.聽They are bad for you. Most of them are just a scam or they are addictive. Counting calories is a pain in the butt.聽 It will drive you nuts. But, losing weight is simple. You just have to do the right things. 鈥? Fad diets sometimes work but, you can be sure that at least 25% of the weight you lose will be muscle. Then when you stop the diet you will gain back all of the weight you lost but no muscle. So, you will have 25% more fat than you did before! Fad diets just鈥╝ren%26#039;t worth the bother. 鈥? Fasting or skipping meals will teach your body that famine is about to happen and your body will begin to store more fat to get you through the next period when food is not available. 鈥? Here%26#039;s a simple trick that can help you lose weight without doing anything else. Drink a litre of water as soon as you wake up in the morning and then drink two more throughout the day. You%26#039;ll notice a difference the first month. 鈥? Here%26#039;s a better way. For every pound of muscle that you add your body will burn 3000 calories (1lb) of fat every day. That means that just by having an extra pound of muscle on your body you will burn a pound of fat every day! So, add muscle! 鈥? This is the fastest way to add a pound of muscle. Squats and Pushups! You do them on alternate days; squats one day, pushups the next. And you do them SuperSlow style. That is, you do the easy part twice as slow as the hard part. That way you fatigue the muscles quickly. Then you rest the muscles for 48鈥╤ours which gives the body a chance to make new muscles.

Squats should be done with a wide stance and all the way to the floor. Pushups the with palms shoulder width apart and all the way to the floor, then all the way up. Use the full range of motion of the muscle group you are trying to develop.

The idea is to tire the muscles out completely so do a set of squats until you can%26#039;t do another, then rest for a couple of minutes and do it again. Do that 3 times and you%26#039;re done for the day. The following day, don%26#039;t do squats but do pushups. Do them the same way,

go down twice as slow as you come up.

You will lose weight fast, unless you add more junk food and fat to your diet. Instead, eat at least 5 to 7 different raw vegetables and fruits every day. Cut out anything that comes in a bag or package. Cut out all processed foods, soft drinks and sweets. Eat more grains and less red meat. Check out the Food Pyramid.

If you really want to give your body the best

possible chance to be healthy and fat free, go to infinity2.com and order their weight loss formula and Essentials for Life. That will give you all the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and probiotics that your body needs and will keep you feeling better and healthier. They also have a Proteabolic Mass Formula for serious athlete who want to build muscle mass quickly and safely.

Weight loss without exercise is not good. You need to eat healthy, exercise and get your rest. You will feel better, look better and be healthier. Try it for a week. You will notice a difference. You will feel better and that will motivate you to continue.

Losing weight only in specific areas of the body is impossible.聽 You can%26#039;t just lose weight around the belly, for instance.

If you want tight, rippled abs, do crunches and leg raises every other day the way I described above. 鈥℅ood luck!

However, even though this is what you%26#039;re asking for, I think it may be quite daunting for a beginner. It happens that Georg Feuerstein has written that book as well. It%26#039;s called Yoga for Dummies (written with Larry Payne). Published in 1999. ISBN 0764551175.

I normally feel great after yoga, however, this one time I have a severe headache. Ive been drinking water to stay hydrated. Whats the reason ?|||headache must be due to some other reason as yoga will not be followed by headache . you always will be full of energy after yoga with mentally very calm and Serene.physically also you will be more active.|||When you do yoga you are actually activating the energy system of your body. In ancient India they called this the kundalini (energy body) which consists of 7 chakras (energy centres). I won%26#039;t go into too many details because explaning everything will take very long.

In a nutshell if you experience a huge headache after yoga it probably means that lots of energy is going to your eyebrow centre (chakra).

If this idea intrigues you, you can read more about the different energy centres by searching on google for chakras or kundalini.|||NOt at all you should not have any such problem after Yoga..

you must be doing something wrong, consult a yoga expert...|||Yoga can cure headaches (sometimes), it shouldn%26#039;t cause them. These things happen though, there%26#039;s no point in fretting, take some pain relief and a LITTLE more water.|||after yoga session usually one feel healthy

Yoga mat smells like rubber or plastic- How do I get rid of the smell?

When I got my yoga mat 6 months ago, and I unwrapped it from the plastic, the odor of rubber or plastic was very strong. It has gone down slightly but I cannot get my face near it because it is so strong.

I have tried cleaning with soap and water, window cleaner, and airing it out for days outside as well as inside my house.

Any suggestions?? Im desperate... its a really strong smell and interferes with my yoga practice...|||if it was outside, was it in the heat/sunlight?

My suggestion might be even more smelly.

Put it in your car in the summertime for several days. Let the hot car bake it out.

Heat is the main thing that might continue to bake out fumes. But if it gets too hot it might also damage it and smell worse.

Dunno.|||Buy a different mat, one that%26#039;s natural rubber. Or even start using wool mats. That smell is definetly nasty.

Is it proper to do the yoga squat while waiting in public?

When waiting for someone/something, is it appropriate to do so while in the yoga squat? Is that inherently offensive to someone less flexible? I always attempt to do it discreetly. I would never do a pose/asana right next to someone. Unfortunately, after sitting in the car, I need the relief offered by the yoga squat (and forward bend). I have had surgery once on a herniated disc, and was recently told I must quit running because of my recurring back/neck pain. I find I have to do poses throughout the day to relief the constant pain.

Thank you.|||Many people, like those in Asia, squat in public places-- while waiting for a bus, eating their food, etc. and is considered normal.

I myself do asanas such as twists, forward bends and squats as discreetly as I can in public places, and while I sometimes get strange looks from others, no one has really found it extremely offensive (or at least I haven%26#039;t been told). It would be preferable to either find an isolated area or perhaps a more acceptable location (such as a park or a beach).

Try not to be too conscious while doing your poses, and do not let people who stare affect you. When I travel, I always do a headstand before my flight at the airport (in a discreet corner) and people who see me are actually happily amused by this. (I%26#039;ve even had strangers come up to me and ask if they could join me!)

If people ask, tell them you%26#039;re doing yoga poses due to your back condition. Most people are either curious or will just ignore you anyway. So go ahead, do your asanas!

Namaste.|||Nothing wrong with it. If people stare just tell them you are in pain and this is the only thing that relieves the pain. I%26#039;m sure they%26#039;d understand.

I am Yoga teacher from India. I want to start my studio. Any ideas about investement option &risks?

Me and my husband have Yoga certification from India. We want to start small with little liability. We live in Redmond, Or. We are willing to relocate.|||You should go to a wealthier area. Rent/Buy a small studio. Something tells me that there aren%26#039;t too many %26quot;new-agey-yoga-types%26quot; in Oregon. In a larger area (like California), you%26#039;ll make a killing because of the fact that you are Indian. It will make it feel like REAL yoga. You know, really authentic.

Obviously, the risk is that your business will fail and you will lose a lot of money. You could take out a loan from the bank to afford the studio. You actually have a lot of options. You could just start out small in Oregon, build up a small fortune, and then move your business to a larger/wealthier area with your own money.

Hope this helps.

When I try to do boat pose in yoga I cannot straighten my legs because they shake uncontrollably. Why?

I would rate my yoga experience as intermediate. I work out (either cardio or strength) five days per week. I can touch my toes with straight legs, so I don%26#039;t think flexibility is a problem. I think I%26#039;m a very healthy person, so why can%26#039;t I straighten my legs during this exercise without having them shake like crazy?

Thanks!|||My first guess would be you would benefit from more core development.

Especially in Boat pose, your core is the anchor/foundation from which your legs and upper torso extend outwards from.

Without a steady/soild foundation, your extended limbs can literally be shaky.

Although, even with good core, you also still need good quad (front upper thigh muscle) strength for Boat pose.

Don%26#039;t know how much core work you regularly incorporate in your strength training, plus, whether you do leg extensions for quad strength.

I don%26#039;t care much for crunches/sit ups, so instead do the Captains Chair.

If not familiar, Captains Chair is somewhat like a tall high chair missing it%26#039;s seat.

You support yourself off the ground by elbows, then lift/crunch the thighs/legs up towards your abs.

It%26#039;s basically just vertical crunches.

You can do it with knees/legs straight to increase difficulty.

I alternate these with back extensions, so as to maintain balanced front and back core strength.

If not already a regular part of your asana practice, I would also highly recommend Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations) for core development.

Emphasizing slow, smooth transitions from Down dog, Plank, Chaturanga, Up Dog, back to Down dog, is great core work.

Namaste%26#039;,

dwb|||your problem isn%26#039;t that you are unhealthy. It%26#039;s that you have poor balance, which is fine. It takes time and practice to get good balance...just keep working on it and you will be fine soon.

How can yoga help you lose weight?

Does it even help you lose weight? How? And can that be your only source of cardio thats enough to help? Ide like any facts about yoga :) Thank you!|||it teaches you to use every part of your body, using your weight, I would not have it as your only sourse of cardio. I just started 2 weeks ago, and I feel great. You cannot drink OJ before hand you will get sick. U will sweat like u are running. I had real bad joint pain, and I%26#039;m feeling good Like I said I just started but so far so good.|||Some types of yoga can help you lose weight, but not all types. There%26#039;s one that%26#039;s done in a hot room that%26#039;s set at a temp of around 97 degrees. That form, I can%26#039;t remember the name of it, makes you sweat A LOT! You can lose some weight that way.

Other forms of yoga are more for relaxation. Yoga is good to add to your workout, but it shouldn%26#039;t be your sole form of cardio. You just won%26#039;t get enough to make a difference. I use yoga in addition to cardio. In fact, I use yoga and Pilates once a week each to vary my workout routine.

If you%26#039;re looking for a good workout, try Pilates. You won%26#039;t work up that much of a sweat (especially on the floor version), but you%26#039;ll still get a great workout. If you pay for the Pilates reformer classes, those will put your body through a rigorous workout (staying balanced on a machine while you workout is hard!).|||it depends on how strenuous your yoga classes are. Some yoga classes are really intense and get your heart rate elevated, however many are really very low impact. you need to find an activity that gets your heart rate elevated for 40-60 minuetes 4-6 times per week. This may be high impact yoga, jogging, areobics etc.

Keep in mind that a lot of people enjoy yoga because it is peacefull and relaxing... this is not the type of yoga that will help you lose weight,|||you are moving your body.

1What is the proper breathing technique for Bikram Yoga? How long do you hold a pose?

Also, is it okay to do Bikram in a semi-warm room opposed to it being really hot. I know you probably won%26#039;t get the benefits of sweating as much and releasing as much toxins, but is it okay for this type of yoga?|||It sounds like you don%26#039;t have a studio in your area. I%26#039;ve been doing bikram yoga for 3.5 years, and have my own opinion about the heat. I believe that the heat should enhance your practice rather than hinder it. When the room is a nice 104 like it should be it%26#039;s lovely. When it gets to about 50% humidity and feels much hotter it can be cumbersome. Then again, I%26quot;m not a size zero. So, in my opinion as long as the room is warm you%26#039;ll be fine. Unlike Ashtanga, Bikram doesn%26#039;t create as much heat internally so you might want to go for a run first or wear warm clothing as you practice in a cooler room.

Breathing should be a 6-second inhale followed by a 6-second exhale. For the belly down postures they recommend what they call 80-20 breathing. Inhale completely, then exhale 20%, inhale 20% and keep using the top 20% of the lung capacity. You%26#039;ll find a lot of questions answered on www.bikramyoga.com

What is the best way to clean a yoga mat? Preferably without dry cleaning...?

I am not sure of the best way to clean a yoga mat. The one I have has acquired a bit of nasty smells accordingly. I wonder if you can just soak it in mild soap and wring it out, or if that might mess it up ? (it is that weird tacky foam-type material)|||I clean mine with a mixture of white distilled vinegar and water. I fill the tub with warm water and add 1/2 cup vinegar to the water. Let it sit in the tub for about 30 minutes. Then I drain the water, rinse with warm water. Towel dry it a little and hang up to dry the rest of the way.

Vinegar is a great deodorizer and the vinegar smell dissipates as it dries.|||Just soak it in the bath tub with some hot water and liquid laundry detergent(a capful of bleach won%26#039;t hurt), rinse and hang to dry.|||you actually take a bucket of urine and wipe it down. this has essential ingredients and is free. after wiping it down with the urine, wipe it down with vinegar to remove the smell. I%26#039;ve done yoga for 12 years and I know this sounds ridiculous but it really does work.|||Soaking it in the tub with some gentle cleaner is great (I don%26#039;t recommend bleach, unless you want a spotted mat), if you are prepared to wait for it to drip dry in 3 days. If you are, the gentle cycle on your washer is an option too.

If can%26#039;t wait for it to dry that long, try just wiping it down with a moist (not wet) rag with either vinegar or cleaner on it.

How long will it take to become a yoga/pilates teacher?

I started pilates and yoga in January (having done practically no exercise previously) and I absolutely love them. I would like to become a teacher in either but wondered how long it would take to reach the level of fitness needed to train as a teacher. Also how many times should I practise every week? Thanks.|||Since you%26#039;ve only started doing pilates and yoga recently, I suggest that you do this for at least one year before you start teaching. Whether or not you are flexible and fit, doing it for this amount of time allows you to understand the postures more by observing your body, and your improvement throughout the year.

Doing yoga/pilates is completely different from teaching, because you will encounter all sorts of people in your class-- from flexible, stiff, young, old, strong, weak, etc. Before I started teaching in a studio, I practiced teaching my family and friends for a couple of months to make myself comfortable instructing them, as well as dealing with any shortcomings a student may have, such an injuries, and conditions like arthritis.

I do my practice almost everyday, even before I became a teacher. A beginner can start with 2 times a week, but if you%26#039;re aspiring to become a teacher I would suggest that you do it at least 4 times a week.

When you feel ready to become a teacher, there are yoga and pilates teacher training courses (especially if you live in the US) available. You can get your certification for as short as a weekend, but most serious teacher trainings are at least one month long.

Becoming a teacher requires hard work and dedication. You will know when you feel truly ready to teach. In my case, I have found it to be a truly rewarding experience because I feel good, calm and happy when I%26#039;m doing yoga, and I%26#039;m sharing this with others.|||This has been really helpful information to me. I%26#039;m interested in getting in the best shape I can while putting on some muscle. I am looking into taking a pilates or yoga class. Is it okay for me to wear yoga pants out in public?

I have a pair of yoga pants from Aerie. They%26#039;re basically like a pair of black leggings but they are longer and bootlegged. I%26#039;m just wondering if it would look weird if I wore them out in public. They%26#039;re really tight and I%26#039;m really thin. I usually wear a thong underneath so there%26#039;s no pantylines.

Would you think it was kind of gross or weird if you saw someone wearing something like that?|||It depends on what you are going out to do and what you wear with it.

If you are just running errands or something, I see no problem with that. I have actually had to leave the gym and run to Walmart or something wearing yoga pants.

However, for a day out at the mall or hanging out with friends, I%26#039;d have to say no.|||It%26#039;s a little weird. It can look like your trying to hard to get attention. Even if that%26#039;s not true people will think that. If you don%26#039;t care what people think then go ahead.

Also, where are you going? If yoru just going to the grocery store or on a walk then sure. If your going to someone%26#039;s house or to a place where you know a lot of people then probably not.|||I think it would be fine if you are wearing gym shoes and gym type top...people will know you are going to or from the gym. Have you ever seen any over weight ballerinas?(not to offend nobody)seriously?I%26#039;ve never seen one and do you think big girls/boys can do ballet?

Also what exactly is yoga apart from an exercise?Does it have an origin?|||Yes I%26#039;m quite certain overweight people can do ballet if they put the effort into it. The reason why proffessionals all seem to have the same body type is because they are choosen for thier shape as much as thier dancing ability (this is especially true for women). I think that%26#039;s terribly old fashioned and it would be much more interesting to see different body types on stage, but who knows when it will change.|||I%26#039;m only 16 and I%26#039;ve been dancing since I have been 3, and from what I know... there aren%26#039;t any legit over weight ballerinas. But leg exercises alone will not remove the cellulite you will also need to:

Dry skin body brush

Drink plenty of water and herbal teas

Cellulite Massage|||no, try aerobics

Yoga is an ideal exercise to make your body strong, develop concentration and lets you get in touch your inner self. Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word denoting yoke or union. It is an ancient philosophy, propounded by Patanjali in ancient times. The primary objective of yoga is to help you achieve a perfect balance between mind, body and spirit. It relaxes the mind, brings you closer to your environment and improves your concentration and mental focus. This makes you stress-free and relaxed. You become more humble, accepting that everything in life is will of God.

I have done a little research online but it seems that almost any studio can pop up and claim to offer some number of training hours for instructors and whatnot. Is there an official website for yoga instructors that offers the names of accredited (if there is such a thing) programs?|||You%26#039;re right........there are lots of studios out there who are claiming that. Unfortunately, at this time it is still unregulated in the US. However, there is an organization called The Yoga Alliance which has certain requirements that yoga teachers must fulfill in order to register with them. Is yoga really as stress relieving as the websites say?

I have a lot of anxiety and was thinking of trying yoga.|||It can be.

Yoga includes deep, full breathing, which can help calm and quiet the mind. Yoga also encourages one learn to focus on the moment, rather than fretting or feeling anxious about the past or future.

Unlike many other forms of exercise, yoga also encourages you to accept where you are on a given day without judgment. So if you go to class today and you%26#039;re a bit tired or feeling less flexible than yesterday, you%26#039;re encouraged to do your best today, without worrying or comparing yourself to others.

Many classes also end with a relaxation segment, which gives your mind a chance to slow down.

Also, there are many forms of yoga. Some are gentler and quieter, which may be what you want, but if you prefer a more rigorous routine, ashtanga or hot yoga can give you a very challenging workout.

The best way to find out if yoga really works is to try it out. Many libraries carry yoga cds or dvds, or try a free yoga podcast. Hope you find something that works for you!|||Absolutely! Yoga takes practice though. Don%26#039;t expect to be stress-free your first time, but it is well worth the practice. In time, you will be able to really relax plus give your body many, many other benefits! It%26#039;s helpful for sleeping better, it exercises your internal organs, it helps to detox your body, helps your posture, aids breathing and digestion ... the list goes on and on. Try it!|||If you enjoy doing it, it really is. But if you prefer fast paced workouts then it might stress you out even more because you have to be quiet and calm lol. I have to alternate depending on my mood. It didn%26#039;t help my anxiety, but sure does help back pain.|||Yes, it is. I would absolutely recommend it. It%26#039;s fun, a bit challenging, and it makes you feel so relaxed afterwards.|||yes it is

Does Yoga constitute as a full excercise program to help become fit?

Is doing yoga alone enough to burn calories, and make you just generally fit? I%26#039;m not looking to build muscle, build tone, lose weight, or anything in particular. I just want to be FIT and HEALTHY. Would yoga be enough to make someone fit and healthy?

I often walk and ride my bike, but not often or consistently enough to count as %26#039;excercise%26#039; but I feel yoga is something I could incorporate into my life. But would it help?|||Being fit and healthy is multi-dimensional. There are four things you need to consider when getting fit--muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility and body composition (or body fat ratio). And no, I don%26#039;t believe that one form of exercise can help you achieve balance in all four categories. Now, that doesn%26#039;t mean that Yoga won%26#039;t give you what you want--but if you are looking for general well-rounded good health, you may want to incorporate all four areas into your exercise program and lifestyle. Now, you do not need to be an athlete to be healthy.

Pascale Vandenbroucke|||I would say yes. If you were looking to lose weight, I%26#039;d also suggest a cardio workout, but if you%26#039;re just looking for fitness and tone, then yoga is fantastic. I%26#039;ve seen people%26#039;s bodies change and look leaner and longer while doing yoga alone.|||I consider it sufficient exercise for me!!

Any movement is considered %26quot;exercise%26quot;!!! Housework such as washing the dishes, vacuuming, yard work, anything you do is exercise. Don%26#039;t ever make the mistake of thinking you need to be in an organized sport, join a gym, or whatever for it to be %26quot;exercise%26quot;!

Yes!! Yoga works wonders by stretching muscles you never thought you might even have. And stretching the muscles even slowly is burning calories. It keeps the bod supple and moving correctly. You might also consider tai chi. It does the same thing!|||Yeah! it keeps you in shape. I have been in yoga for a few years now. And I only weigh 102 pounds. But i do eat pretty healthy just because i am in med school and found out what is really bad and what is pretty goos for you. I would say htat thats enough to burn calories, and be a healthy person

What Yoga positions should I do to become flexible & maintain a good balance?

I have just recently decided to try some yoga, and when I got the book telling me all about it, and certain positions for it, there are many! I just want to pick a few, but i%26#039;m not sure which positions I should do. Can someone help? Thanks.|||There are many yoga poses that will make you flexible, sun salutation poses are great, cut pose is nice.. in fact, you need to know the physiological benefits of each pose to better understand its usability and effectiveness.. for this purpose, here%26#039;s a good free e-course:

http://www.yoga-health-beauty-energy.com...|||Instead of just jumping into a yoga book, try a yoga class at your local YMCA/GYM. My yoga instructor @ my local Community College said that if you don%26#039;t do specific counter-balances after specific positions you can hurt yourself. I%26#039;ve just started doing yoga too, been to 4, 2-hours classes so far, maybe i%26#039;m in the same boat as you.

Hope i%26#039;ve helped.|||Doggy style
