Does yoga and pilates really help with postural kyphosis?

This question is for anyone who has had postural kyphosis and have tried yoga and/or pilates to fix it. Did it work? Any other suggestions?|||I apologize, I know your question was directed at people who have experience with your question, but I was curious and looked it up and found some direct information for you. Here is an article that addresses yoga and postural kyphosis: http://www.yogabasics.com/learn/yoga-for...

I see there is much on the net about it, and yes I do know that yoga can definitely correct bad posture, or a rounded back due do bad posture. The article I linked you does warn about consulting a health care professional if your kyphosis is caused by osteoporosis or other bone weakening disease before trying yoga to correct it.

I highly recommend doing yoga, it has helped my posture tremendously, and I had no idea I even had bad posture. I walk taller and hold my back straighter, and I feel so full of calm energy, I can%26#039;t imagine myself stopping yoga now. It%26#039;s part of my life forever. :)

As for the pilates, I don%26#039;t think it will help as much as yoga at all. Yoga emphasises work on the spine and on creating space between the vertebrae in each pose. Pilates has no such focus, it is geared more toward strengthening the muscles. Yoga will strengthen, increase flexibility, and help pull the bones and muscles back into correct alignment when done properly. make sure you do yoga that emphasises correct alignment of the skeletal structure while you do it.

Good luck!

I read to NEVER hold your breath during a Yoga session. How true is that?

I read that you should never hold your breath while meditating or doing some yoga. But a lot of form of Yoga asks you to hold your breath in different ratio like 4-7-8 etc.. What is your personaly experience breathing ratio? Thanks|||Perhaps there is confusion between breathing instructions applying to asana practice (yoga postures), especially Vinyasa, versus various other pranayam (yogic breath regulation) techniques.

During asana practice (again, especially Vinyasa), the breath is not held.

(Vinyasa is frequently defined as breath-synchronized movement).

Ujjayi without retention is the only pranayam technique I have heard recommended during asana practice.

I believe the various other pranayam techniques, such as those incorporating varying inhale/exhale ratios, are intended to be initiated and concluded while maintaining a single posture (often Padmasana/Full Lotus, Sukhasana/Easy pose, or other related poses).

People often interpret the term %26#039;yoga%26#039; as only pertaining to asana (since frequently, that is only part of yoga that Westerners practice).

Asana is actually a small slice of yogic knowledge.

How to avoid passing out in yoga class?

I%26#039;ve almost passed out in the past 3 yoga classes I%26#039;ve gone too- my vision gets really dark, and my hearing starts to fade- like a really bad head rush! It%26#039;s embarrassing to revert to the child%26#039;s pose when everyone else is doing what they%26#039;re supposed to. How can I avoid this? My instructor said that it may have to do with low blood pressure-- how could I change that? I am breathing normally too- so I don%26#039;t think that%26#039;s it.|||Stay away from yoga class or else eat better foods that provide energy and drink plenty of water before class!

What should I get to begin yoga at home?

I would love to start doing yoga, but I would want to get some kind of dvd and do it at home. What dvd s good for beginners? Do I need anything else?|||I would highly recommend Yoga Zone:

http://www.yogazone.com/

In addition to the dvds, you will need a yoga mat (they have them at Target) and possibly straps and blocks depending on your flexibility (or lack of). The yoga zone site has a yoga for beginners link that will explain the use of straps and blocks.

I think the yoga zone dvds have to ordered off amazon or barnes and nobles, but I think anything that has a beginner next to it would be great.

What's the best type of yoga to improve your flexibility for running in track and field?

I%26#039;m a 400m runner for my track team and one thing my coach says I need to work on is my flexibility...regular stretching doesn%26#039;t seem to work well enough, so what type of yoga should I look for to improve?|||Hatha yoga is nice for you.. but yoga in general is awesome for your flexibility.. not only your flexibility, but also your focus, concentration and inner strength, which is very crucial for you as a runner I guess!

Does anyone know of a good Yoga video to buy that will actually help you lose weight and get your body tone?

Of course my New Years resolution is to lose weight I want to do yoga in-between my running.|||Here%26#039;s the thing - purchasing a yoga vid isn%26#039;t going to cause you to lose weight or tone your body. At most you might burn a calorie or two typing in your credit card info.

You have to actually DO the exercises so it hardly matters which one you get. You%26#039;ll get out of it what you put into it. Ownership bestows no benefits.

That said, if you%26#039;re new to yoga I recommend starting elsewhere. If you have cable or whatever, check for any exercise channels. You can catch some yoga shows. Even better, if you have any %26quot;on demand%26quot; type channels, you can watch them at your leisure.

Also check into videos at your library. That way you don%26#039;t spend any money and you get to see many more and choose the one that suits you best.

And it wouldn%26#039;t hurt to take a yoga class or two. It%26#039;s important for beginners to get the positions down properly - it%26#039;s hard to learn that from a book or video. You can check around with local yoga studios and see if they offer any free classes.

As to books, it won%26#039;t hurt to check them out of the library as well. But just stick with the simple positions - there are many poses that look extremely complicated - but aren%26#039;t if you know how to get into them. But that%26#039;s what the books don%26#039;t tell you - they just show you a bound position and you have to figure out how to get from a standing position to having your arms wrapped around your legs!

Back to the videos - start with anything that has for beginners on it. It%26#039;ll be rather boring but it really is important to get your positioning right.|||First of all... take responsibility for yourself and your actions... be aware of what you eat, how you act, how you take care of your physical body.

I don%26#039;t know how long you have been practicing, or any of your background, but start with where you are today, don%26#039;t try to over do it... don%26#039;t go down the black diamond hill if you%26#039;ve never tried the bunny hill.

Knowing that... I love anything from Rodney Yee or Susan Deason. Richard Freeman is good for Ashtanga. Rodney Yee has a good one, yoga for athletes, where he gives a short summary of asanas for runners.

If you have any injuries, you may also wish to research on Pilates. It%26#039;s very low strain and helps to tone core muscles + the breathing techniques helps with stress.|||Most schools that offers yoga classes has Yoga For Beginners. Start from there and decide later on what kind of yoga you%26#039;d like to specialize in ((:

Have fun!|||Most studios in my area offer an intro series of classes for people new to yoga. It lasts three to four weeks and meets once a week for an hour to an hour and a half. This is an excellent way to begin as it will give you a firm foundation to begin exploring other classes. I always encourage beginners to look for a class that offers a lot of instruction. Classes that are described as vinyasa or flow usually offer little or no instruction, so I would stay away from them for the first few months. Classes called hatha, classical, or gentle may be a good starting place to continue learning the basics.

Namaste!|||yoga in modern america is of two types, meditation and hatha. as for meditation, each individual must choose his or her own path, mine is raja. for the other i suggest Ashtanga.|||Meditation!!

I would like to add a little yoga each day. What are 2-3 poses that can help me be more flexible that I can do everyday when I wake up. What's the best type of yoga to help me with flexibility?

I can barely touch past my knees and I have always had a lot of problems with flexibility. I am not overweight, I am very physically active and walk over 10 miles a day, but have no flexibility. What is the best type of yoga to help and if I do it frequently how long will it take until I can see real improvement?|||Basic hatha yoga is the type you would like to try as a beginner. Like you, I was quite inflexible, especially with my hamstrings. These are the muscles located at the back of your thighs which are responsible for the forward bending action. Walking, running, wearing high heels, etc. can cause your hamstrings to tighten.

Based on personal experience, it usually takes a couple of months to see significant improvement. You can start practicing 4 times a week increasing to doing it everyday when you feel comfortable enough with the yoga poses. Although you will feel a noticeable change in your body, mind and emotions even just after a few weeks of consistent practice.

Yoga will complement and even enhance your walking exercise. It is always best especially for beginners to practice yoga under the supervision of a certified instructor. If you cannot find a hatha yoga class, I highly recommend that you try Iyengar yoga.

Good luck!|||any type, since you do not have flexibility, will help. Actually, you can just do any basic stretches.

Hold the stretch for about 20 seconds and do not bounce the muscle. After about a week, you should start to see some type of improvement, but stretching muscles does take time.|||Hi there. Is it true that most yoga classes are female only because women like to blow off amongst themselves?

I think this question has been outstanding since yoga was invented. Many, many centuries ago.|||Who, in fact, do they blow off?|||Question outstanding for centuries? This is the first I%26#039;ve heard of it. I really don%26#039;t think that that happens in Yoga.

What is the difference between yoga and Pilates?

I have been getting some painful lower pack pain on and off recently and my normal aerobic exercises is hurting my back so much, someone at work recommended Yoga to help. When looking at DVDs and reviews Pilates kept coming up? What%26#039;s the difference, and which would be better to still tone up and help my back?

Thanks|||Here is a good short article on the difference and similarities between pilates and yoga, I recommend you read it: http://healing.about.com/od/pilates/a/yo...

You want to be careful with back pain, as you don%26#039;t know what could be causing it. Any exercise could exacerbate it (make it worse), or could make it better, depending on what is causing the pain.

Visit your chiropractor and find out what%26#039;s causing your pain first, see what he recommends.

You could try yoga - I had lower back pain for a long time and began doing gentle yoga, and over time my back pain disappeared. Do this - try whichever one sounds good to you, but don%26#039;t do anything that makes your pain worse.

I have found yoga to be excellent for helping my low back pain, but there are also some yoga positions I cannot do because it strains my low back too much and causes me more problems. It%26#039;s about learning to listen to your body and learning what is okay and what is not.

Yoga isn%26#039;t just stretching, either. It strengthens and tones the muscles, as well as %26quot;wringing out%26quot; the toxins and %26quot;stale%26quot; fluids from areas such as between the vertebrae, the hips, and other areas that don%26#039;t get much attention (smaller muscle groups, tendons, etc) in regular exercise.

If you read the article I linked, you will find it suggests doing BOTH yoga and pilates, as they compliment each other.

Take care of your back, don%26#039;t do anything that causes it pain, and go gently when you try new exercises.

Best of luck!|||You would be better off doing pilates. Its a series of exercises that strengthens your abs (core) and your back. I had alot of lower back pain for years and I have been doing pilates now for 2 years and the pain is gone. At first its hard to do because of the pain but keep going and after about a month or 2 you will feel the difference. I was going once a week to the gym and doing mat pilates. Yoga is mostly stretching and balance, it will not be good for your back.|||I think yoga is soo much better if you want total relaxation and stretch ur muscles (I%26#039;m addicted to it!) Combine the both and you%26#039;ll feel GREAT about your body, self and mind|||Pilate%26#039;s is very similar to yoga there is not a lot of difference, the breathing is different , in yoga you breath in before going into a posture , Pilate%26#039;s you breath the other way. in Pilate%26#039;s some of the moves are done faster and more repetitions, both are beneficial and keep you aligned and supple. Both strengthen the back muscles|||Yoga is a millenar indian practice that involves a whole phylosophy and lifestyle.

Pilates was invented by a guy named Pilates who couldn%26#039;t do big movements but still wanted to exercise so he cam e up with this series of movements and later on a machine where you strap yourself to.

The reason why you keep getting Pilates instead of yoga, might just be because nowadays in gyms they try to commercialise versions of a mix of both (which turns out to be none really, but still good exercise).

Try wikipedia.com on both subjects and see which one seems to better fit your case/mindset/lifestyle.

What are some good exercises/yoga poses to help fix my posture?

I always walk with my head down low, pretty much always have. Would like to have good posture, and not become a hunchback. I really need some good exercises or yoga to get my posture to how it should be.|||Standing is one of the important and beneficial yoga poses. This pose is helpful in aligning your body and your feet. It is also very useful in improving and maintaining a good posture. It is an advantage because if you have a bad posture, your backbones can be stretched and straightened without noticing it. Standing poses helps in giving strength to your legs and at the same time increase elasticity in your legs and hips because they are all connected to each other. |||I read the article over and thought it was a pretty good article which outlined how certain weight training exercise regimes can really boost your natural growth hormone production. Of course, we all know that more natural growth hormone you have in your system, combined with a higher natural testosterone count will lead to higher gains in lean muscle mass.

I have to admit, the exercise regime for those actors, in it鈥檚 whole format seemed harmless, but if you performed these exercises in succession of each other, it makes for a pretty intense workout. Here鈥檚 the workout:

鈥?Pull ups: 25 reps;

鈥?Dead lifts (135 pounds): 50 reps;

鈥?Push ups: 50 reps;

鈥?Box jumps with 24 inch boxes: 50 reps;

鈥?Floor wipers (135 pounds): 50 reps;

鈥?Kettle bell cleans and presses (36 pounds): 50 reps;

鈥?Pull ups: 25 reps;

Each exercise is to be performed in succession with no rest between exercises. This is a very intense set that, I would imagine, require a huge amount of energy and effort. Imagine trying to do 3 sets with this type of set and rep scheme. Anyways, my curiosity got the better of me, and I went over the entire article.|||Yes you can, through yoga postures! How many times a week should I do yoga to get toned muscles?|||I do yoga stretches daily. 15 minutes in the morning and 10-15 in the evening. Aside from walking 20 minutes 3 times a week, that%26#039;s all the exercising I do and I eat a lot! (lol) But I%26#039;m toned. I%26#039;m 5%26#039;3 and weigh 118. Hope this helps.|||If u can do it once a day. If u also have any access to some equipment you should also consider light resistance training. The best workout for toning muscles is low weight/high reps.

Is it okay to do yoga with a herniated disc?

I%26#039;ve spent most of the past two months in bed with a herniated disc and am getting desperate. The doctor assigned some exercises but I%26#039;m used to doing more exciting and active things like kickboxing, which I guess I will never do again. So what can I do, besides walking? I have never done yoga before but it sounds like an option. Does anyone have any experience with this?|||Sit in virasana, or hero posture. If you have knee problems or have tight quadriceps, sit on a block or in between thick blankets.

Interlace your fingers and raise your arms to shoulder level first, stretching them forward with your palms facing outward. Keeping the spine steady, inhale and elongate through the spine as you raise your arms from the armpits until the palms face the ceiling. Keep your neck erect, your chest expanded and your elbows straight. Make sure your head does not lean back and your body doesn%26#039;t tilt forward. Breath evenly through the nose and hold up to 1 minute.

Virasana helps ease stiffness in the shoulders and neck, and may help with herniated disks.

Avoid doing seated forward bends, which may compress the disks. You may do uttanasana or standing forward bend. Make sure that your pelvis is tilted far enough to allow elongation of the spine, widening the disk spaces. Make sure you do not round your back.

it is highly recommended to do these with a qualified yoga instructor, preferably one-on-one private sessions. Look for a teacher who has had experience working with students who have the same condition.|||I recommend that you find a studio that teaches Iyengar yoga. What kind of exercise do you recommend I try, pilates or yoga?

I want to buy an exercise video, because I want to tone up and lose some weight. I go to the gym, but I just started, and I would like to be able to fit something in on the days I cannot make it to the gym. I have a chubby stomach, and big thighs. Do you recommend I try a pilates video, or a yoga video? Or maybe you have other suggestions?|||These are similiar programs.

http://www.zonepilates.com/|||I am doing the same thing, i just started this week. I am doing yoga, pilates and cardio. Yoga is good for stretching and breathing and pilates is a combination of both and a little more and i love it! Pilates works on your core so you are working on the abs a lot, and you can really feel the burn! I rented a dvd from the library, bf i go out and buy one, just to see what it is like. It has yoga and pilates. I just started so i dont see the results but sure do feel them! Also, you have to do cardio, it works, just walking around help shed pounds. Or doing something that will get that heart pumping, and following a pretty decent diet. Yoga and pilates focus on body sculpting, and will give you a leaner look, nice legs and elongates your body. (I am talking about pilates!)

Basically, i say do all three...

Is it not recommended to do any cardio work after a yoga class?

I have been told this by a yoga instructor, though it makes little sense to me and I would like to keep doing treadmill exercise straight after- Is there any reason I shouldn%26#039;t? |||Whne doing yoga you relax all your muscles, stretch them and also slow your heart rate down. If you then go onto building muscle and bringing your heart rate up again you could have serious heart failure, you could also damage your muscles to the point where you can no longer control them. It is a very silly thing to do, and you shouldn%26#039;t really be doing exercises like this if you don%26#039;t understand what they do and how.|||I would have thought it would be much better to do the treadmill before the yoga. At the end of a yoga sessions you cool and down and do relaxation don%26#039;t you which is a good point to stop working out. So maybe just do the treadmill first?

Can someone give me a breakdown of the different types of yoga?

I don%26#039;t know much about any of it, but am interested. I%26#039;ve heared of hatha yoga, but I know there are many different forms or types of it. Can someone break this down for me a little bit, and explain what each includes?|||I personally practice vinyasa, which is based in hatha, but focuses on the flow from one asana into another. There is also a lot of pranayama (breath work), and the asanas chosen are often designed to create heat in the body. It can be pretty sweaty stuff.

I also like Anusara yoga. It%26#039;s sort of a new style, but the one or two classes I%26#039;ve attended, it was quite beautiful - they talk a lot about the inner goodness of humans.|||I%26#039;m definitely not an expert, but the types I know of are Hatha, Ashtanga, Iyengar, and Bikram. Hatha is more about individual strength and flexibility poses, while Ashtanga focuses on series of poses that flow from one to the next, possibly more spiritual. Bikram is where the room is very hot and you get very flexible. Not really sure of the tenets of Iyengar, all I know is that it was founded by the yogi B.K.S. Iyengar.

How do I keep my tailbone from hurting during certain yoga poses?

I just started yoga, but whenever I try to roll up or down, or anything involving my bum on the ground, my tailbone digs into the ground and is very painful. Am I missing something?? I am definitely not bony.... I%26#039;m a good size 12.|||Try making a softer surface, maybe 2 mats or a mat on a blanket. If that doesn%26#039;t work, then don%26#039;t roll.

How many poses involve doing that? I%26#039;ve been taking yoga for a few years and can only think of a couple moves that might hurt that way and they%26#039;re not really yoga positions, just transitions.

Ask your instructor for alternate ways of doing the asanas that hurt or just do something else for those moments.

Our yoga practice is done in a manner that is respectful to our body. You shouldn%26#039;t try to push past your limits. In the end you%26#039;ll get more benefit out of a gentle practice than one that leaves you sore the next day.|||Try sitting on a towel or even a pillow that is not too big. It will give just that bit of cushion for your tailbone so it shouldn%26#039;t hurt so much. Also you can ask your instructor as well.|||Use yoga mat. What is the best way to advertise yoga retreats in Mexico?

I am a yoga teacher living in a small coastal village south of Puerta Vallarata reached by boat. I have put together a unique kind of yoga retreat that includes being invited to the heart of this village life as a way to do yoga and have a real Mexico cultural experience at the same time. The retreat includes yoga, experiencing the local beauty of nature, a birding excursion, interacting with village children and local characters that make this spot unique. One of those is the village healer who uses local plants and herbs for healing treatments. Also exposure to the Huciol Indians through their spirit vision inspired art.

Experienceing true Mexican cuisine with a local family cooking for the group. This retreat can be offered with a minimum of 8 people at a very low rate including 7 nights in the village, 1 night in P.V., yoga, birding, boat ride to and from village, almost all meals, experiences with the village, swmimming, hiking, sunning for $985.

Create a quality web site (not a beginners one) and participate in the two Vallarta message boards below. Don%26#039;t be blatant with ads and put them in the proper areas.|||Hi. I think that first you need to define who your target market is. Is it Mexico, the US? Young and singles? All ages? Children? Depending on your market then you can define where you should advertise. For example. Let%26#039;s say it%26#039;s targeted towards foreigners coming to Mexico, young, people who take an interest in taking care or improving their bodies and persons. Then you might want to start by contacting some local yoga salons and offering a small comission for referring and booking customers. Another try might be a local paper. It all depends on what your market is and what your target audience should be. A website helps, but the first step is getting people to go to your website. Have you done a google search on yoga+mexico or yoga+puerto+vallarta? This might give you some ideas about how to design or drive your campaign. Hope this helps.

What is the most original and basic form of Yoga?

Okay, there%26#039;s a lot of kinds of Yoga. And I am having a hard time choosing one. I just want to know the most basic form of yoga, the type that other kinds of yoga base upon; so that I will be able to stick to one practice and instructor. Thanks.|||By %26quot;yoga%26quot;, will assume you inquire regarding asana (pose) practice, a component of Hatha yoga (as opposed to yogas which traditionally do not include asana: Bhakti, Karma, Jnana).

Tirumalai Krishnamacharya (1888-1989) is frequently referred to as the Grandfather of modern Hatha yoga.

It would appear that Krishnamacharyaya%26#039;s %26quot;style%26quot; was %26quot;no style%26quot; in the sense that it predated the many different styles of Hatha yoga that would evolve later.

Four students of Krishanmarcharya would later become well known for how they later went on to teach asana:

- Krishnamacharya%26#039;s son, T.V.K. Desikachar, whose style now usually referred to as Viniyoga;

- B.K.S. Iyengar, simple known as Iyengar style;

- K. Pattabhi Jois, Astanga Vinyasa;

- Indra Devi, Indra Devi Foundation.

In addition to above four, as am sure you are aware, there are now perhaps two dozen or more distinguishable Hatha yoga styles.

I cannot pretend to know which is most basic or authentic.

I have read some statements that Jois%26#039;s Astanga Vinyasa style is the same method that was taught to him by Krishnamacharya.

Then again, perhaps Devi%26#039;s style is authentic, since it seems that what she taught never developed a distinguishing %26quot;style name%26quot;.

Following link has brief descriptions of many contemporary styles.

http://www.traditionalyogastudies.com/ar...

The biography of Krishnamacharya at wikipedia ends with this statement :

%26quot;Whether you practice the dynamic series of Pattabhi Jois, the refined alignments of B.K.S. Iyengar, the classical postures of Indra Devi, or the customized vinyasa of Viniyoga, your practice stems from one source: a five-foot, two-inch Brahmin born more than one hundred years ago in a small South Indian village.%26quot; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krishnamach...

You see you can do the basics and the Pranayams like %26#039;Kapalvati%26#039; and %26#039;Anulom Bilom%26#039; all you want in a daily manner, but you should never do the other derived yogas which are restricted for people with certain physical problems. What's the difference between Pilates and Yoga?

What%26#039;s the difference between Pilate%26#039;s and Yoga? I practice Pilate%26#039;s one in a while when I am stressed or when my body is in pain :/. Yoga seems to be similar but what%26#039;s the difference.

Also which one is your favorite and are any good DVDs you would recommend to do at home?|||Pilates focuses on core strength; making the core body muscles (such as the psoas) stronger. it is more %26quot;exercise-like%26quot; than yoga with repetitions. There is usually not a strong mediative component. Pilates will get you in shape and make you strong in a good way - not the surface way like aerobics.

Yoga is more about body awareness. It has a meditative component and is much much older. Yoga will change your life and who you are permanently for the better.

How can you use yoga to help with obesity?

Yoga helped me to lose weight and overcome addictions and self esteem issues. Now I want to find a way to help my loved ones to overcome obesity. Please help as I am concerned for the health and happiness of my precious family.|||Think about the psychological aspects of your challenge. Talk to them seriously about their problem; use what you know about each family member to create a compelling argument toward a healthier life. In relationships of a long-term nature like familial ones, you already have the communication tools, the %26quot;common language,%26quot; to communicate with them best; a pitfall of long-term relationships is that familiarity breeds negative habits, too, so think about the aspects of communication with your family members that have not worked in the past, and replace or discard those methods.

In order to make changes in one%26#039;s lifestyle, the first thing that must be affected is the inner person. You stand as a compelling and salient example to your family members of what can happen when you want something bad enough. Build on the simple positive nature of your presence in their lives, and deliver your message (your plea, in some cases!), heavy on the positive, always giving them encouragement. Many self-help books have this running theme: we [the general we] avoid success most often because we are *afraid* of it, and scared to change because change means losing something, even if what is lost is of no positive use. As irrational as it sounds, it%26#039;s often so true.

You may need to enlist the help of a trained, licensed mental health practitioner. There%26#039;s absolutely no shame in seeing a therapist of counselor! Nearly everyone does at some point in their lives. Don%26#039;t be afraid to use this or other tools to effect change in their lives.|||Have them do the same thing you did!|||Make it a fun time and get some yoga tapes and get some mats and have everyone practice the simple yoga basic postures and just have a good time teaching and and watching and enjoying each other. Use a basement or some place that will give you and your family ample room to do the poses.|||I%26#039;m sure you learned from yoga that you do your best but let go of the results. You can tell your loved ones about the benefits, etc. but you can%26#039;t force anyone to do anything. Just be a great role model; enjoy your own life and eventually, people may ask how you got so happy and self assurred.

How do you shake up your yoga routine?

Is it vital to join a yoga studio and/or have an instructor, or is there a do-it-yourself way with the basic poses? I was thinking something like a yoga deck of cards (is there such a thing?), where I could shuffle the poses to get a different workout every time. I have a bunch of videos, but they%26#039;re tedious after a while. If joining a class is the best way, please be honest! Thanks!|||I teach yoga, and also used the videos, dvd%26#039;s too. There is something about a class that just makes things more fun. My class all know each other now, and whenever someone new comes in they all speak to them and get to know them. I%26#039;d say classes will perk up your routine. You%26#039;ll meet people, get out of the house, and have a real live teacher! It makes a real difference! Be sure to ask about the level of difficulty before going in, and most of all have fun!

How do you relieve everyday anxiety without medication or yoga?

Everyday I have bad anxiety. Even if I%26#039;m out doing something it affects me. Is there a way to get rid of this without medication, yoga, or therapy?|||Lifestyle and home remedies

Although social anxiety disorder generally requires help from a medical expert or qualified psychotherapist, you can try some self-help techniques to handle situations likely to trigger social anxiety disorder symptoms.

First, assess your fears to identify what situations cause the most anxiety. Apply these techniques to those situations. Practicing these techniques regularly can help you manage or reduce your anxiety. You may need to begin with small steps in situations that aren鈥檛 overwhelming.

These techniques include:

飩?Eating with a close relative, friend or acquaintance in a public setting.

飩?Making eye contact and returning greetings from others, or being the first to say hello.

飩?Preparing for conversation. For instance, read the newspaper to identify an interesting story you can talk about.

飩?Giving someone a compliment.

飩?Focusing on personal qualities you like about yourself.

飩?Showing an interest in others. Ask about their homes, children, grandchildren, hobbies or travels, for instance.

飩?Asking a retail clerk to help you find an item.

飩?Getting directions from a stranger.

In addition, be sure to keep your medical or therapy appointments, take medications as directed, and talk to your doctor about any changes in your condition.

Coping and support

Coping with social anxiety disorder can be challenging. Having social anxiety disorder can make it difficult for you to go to work or school, to interact with other people, or even to visit the doctor. But maintaining connections and building relationships are key ways to help cope with any mental disorder.

Over time, treatment can help you feel more comfortable, relaxed and confident in the presence of others. In the meantime, don鈥檛 use alcohol or illicit drugs to try to get through an event or situation that makes you anxious.

Some positive coping methods include:

飩?Banishing negative thoughts about yourself

飩?Practicing relaxation exercises

飩?Adopting stress management techniques

飩?Reaching out to people you do feel comfortable around

飩?Joining a support group

飩?Engaging in pleasurable activities, such as exercise or hobbies, when you feel anxious

飩?Getting enough sleep

飩?Eating a well-balanced diet

飩?Setting realistic goals

As difficult or painful as it may seem initially, don鈥檛 avoid situations that trigger your symptoms. By regularly facing these kinds of situations, you鈥檒l continue to build and reinforce your coping skills.

Over time, doing this can help control your symptoms and prevent a relapse of your condition. Remind yourself that you can get through anxious moments, that your anxiety is short-lived, and that the negative consequences you worry about so much rarely come to pass.|||Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.

Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.

But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There%26#039;s this herb called %26quot;St John%26#039;s Wort%26quot; - it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John%26#039;s Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.

If you%26#039;re unable to take St John%26#039;s Wort, you can substitute it with Siberian Ginseng or Licorice Herb.

The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced... you have that %26quot;learned behavior%26quot; in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior - Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction... There are several other techniques to help cope them!

Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to....

What is better for loosing weight yoga or Pilates?

I have done some bickrem hot yoga but now its summer i get too hot. I wasnt the best at yoga, so would anyone recomend pilates?|||Pilates is definitely better if weight loss is your goal. Pilates is strength training as well as flexibility and balance, whereas yoga is more geared towards flexibility and relaxation. In Pilates you%26#039;ll build muscle mass all over your body, even in places you didn%26#039;t know muscles existed. What type of yoga is best for toning & flexiblity?

I am 34 and can%26#039;t touch my toes, plus I have recently lost weight and want to tone my abs, and thighs. Which type of yoga should I try for flexibility and toning these areas?|||All they types of yoga promote toning of the entire body and improving flexibility. I have found that Power Yoga (aka. Ashtanga or Vinyasa) is particularly good at toning the entire body. In power yoga, you go through a series of movements following the breath. There are also classes where you do power hold of 1 minute in all the poses. Holding plank or side plank for a minute or more are great ways to tone the core.

Hatha yoga is the more typical yoga class, and it consists of gentle stretching and holding the poses. However, I don%26#039;t find it as effective as power yoga. I can feel the effects of gaining strength and toning from power yoga, but have not had the same effects with hatha yoga classes.

Also, if you want to specifically focus on toning the core (abs) consider taking a Pilate%26#039;s class. Pilate%26#039;s is similar to yoga, but focuses on toning the core more than the entire body.|||All kind of yoga postures will help you tone your body.

What is the difference between Yoga and Pilates?

I just started doing Yoga 3 weeks ago and I absolutely love it. My gym also offers a few Pilates classes, but I wanted to know how the classes differ from each other before I tried it out.|||The Pilates method is a complicated system of effective but gentle, whole-body conditioning and corrective exercises. It was first practiced by dancers and gained mass attention in recent years because of its largely aesthetic body sculpting effects. Yoga is a lifestyle, rather then simply an exercise. Its known as the path to both physical and mental well-being. It includes everything from physical postures and healthy diet to breathing, relaxation and meditation skills.

Pilates mainly concentrates on cultivating core strength in the body and lengthening the spine. Also, Pilates is a valuable tool for increasing strength, definition and proper posture. Yoga aims to work the body equally and unite the body with mind and spirit. Yoga is often considered therapeutic, when compared to Pilates, as it helps people find harmony and release stress.

Breathing and concentration are fundamental to both practices; however yoga employs breath on a deeper level. The slight difference between them is that Pilates instructs one to inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth; while in yoga, one is taught to inhale and exhale through the nose only.

Yoga has many different styles, but all are generally performed in a group setting on a yoga mat with the aid of a yoga instructor. Pilates has a full complement of mat work, but it also incorporates work on Pilates machines which help build a longer, leaner, dancer-like physique.

Cotton fitted clothing is recommended for both Pilates and yoga practitioners. Pilates method doesnt rely as much on extra props - such as blocks, straps, blankets, etc. - as yoga does.|||Hej my english is not so god but I will try. Yoga is more spiritual where you are conecting body and soul. Pilates is more like a training. I like Pilates more. But yoga is god to.

What is the difference between Yoga and Pilates?

What cloting and footwear should i wear for Yoga and Pilates?

Hey! Im going to go to a yoga class tonight i%26#039;ve not been before so just wondering what i should wear. Also going to start pilates so also wondering what i should wear. Are trainers good for your feet?? Im told that i need to wear warm clothes as well??

Also im doing this at a Country Club do places like that normally provide the mats?

Im completely new to the whole county club gym thing!

Thanks|||well usually in yoga you don%26#039;t wear shoes and you just wear relaxing and comfortable clothes.

I%26#039;m not sure about pilates though.

How can do you sit in the adept yoga position?

I want to sit in the adept yoga position for meditation, and though I%26#039;m getting better, considering I%26#039;ve been practising moderately for a month I%26#039;m still having difficulty, also my hips and thighs suffer excruciating pain, has anyone got any tips on how I can improve or loosen my hips/thighs.|||Agree with LillyB; essentially it%26#039;s just a matter of practice, and even then, it%26#039;s not a guarantee.

You can seek out suggested hip-opening poses in books and videos.

Here%26#039;s a sequence on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SwZMQ4gR...

I%26#039;d recommend poses such as:

- Baddha Konasana (bound angle/cobbler%26#039;s pose)

http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/486 ;

- Upavistha Konasana (wide angle seated forward bend) http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/684 ;

- The leg portion of Eka Pada Rajakapotasana (one legged King Pigeon) http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/863 ;

- Hanumanasana (front-to-back splits) http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/874 ;

And, as Lakely alluded to, despite the frequent recommendations to mediatate in poses such as Padmasana (Full Lotus) or Siddhasana (Accomplished/Adept pose) and other similar poses, ultimately, it is the mind that meditates, not the body.

Even a bed-ridden person unable to sit upright can meditate if they desire to.

However, with that said, there are definitely reasons why the above poses are so often recommended, along with other frequent suggested details such as sitting upright with an erect spine.

Best wishes.

Namaste%26#039;,

dwb|||U have to practice all the positions to sit like that for a long time. It%26#039;ll take around 6 months to sit without any pain or uneasiness. There is no shortcut dear! How do you make more income as a yoga instructor?

My friend is struggling to make ends meet as a yoga instructor. How can she build her clientele or what other things could she do to make more income as a professional in this field?|||Well thats all well and fine if Yoga was a commodity or product that was created to market and sell to the masses and make lots of money for the Yoga Instructor, but it is not a commodity or a product, and Yoga Instructorship is not a profession, it is a spiritual vocation, like being a pastor or monk.

Yoga is sacred spiritual pathwork towards self-realization and mergence into God-Consciousness. The western world has bastardized it%26#039;s first, original and only true value: the scriptual yogas of the Vedic Sanatana Dharma are spiritual practices taught without regard to compensationo by holy beings, saints, gurus and monks/swamis from ashrams and temples of Hinduism and its denominations, such as Kashmir Shaiva or Buddhism. Yoga is a spiritual practice, not power this or baby that or lion face whatever.

Your %26#039;friend%26#039; had better get their priorities straight and find a job. Yoga Instructors should be teaching as a higher calling from God and not focus on the money. That goes for Mukunda the guy hocking yoga as a cosmetic surgery substitute. Smells like a well researched, studied and investigated scam: selling yoga as a cosmetic fix! Is it not recommended to do any cardio work after a yoga class?

I have been told this by a yoga instructor, though it makes little sense to me and I would like to keep doing treadmill exercise straight after- Is there any reason I shouldn%26#039;t?|||My suggestion is to ask your yoga instructor the reasoning behind their advice. I see that you are getting conflicting answers here as well, so I think the best thing to do is ask your yoga instructor.

Good luck!|||I would generally avoid combining any cardio with yoga or lifting weights. This is because your blood glucose levels are low after any intense activity and you will not be able to perform the subsequent activity with anywhere near the concentration levels or effort that you can by itself. In addition workouts of more than 90 minutes tend to depress the immune system. If you cannot avoid combining then I would recommend that the cardio come after lifting weights or yoga. This way your nutrients are spent in the activities that build and strengthen muscles and generally cardio doesnt require the same concentration and awareness that yoga or lifting weights does.|||There%26#039;s no reason why you can%26#039;t do a cardio workout after yoga. In fact, the class should be a very good warm up for your muscles and cardio can have a calming effect on the body just as yoga does. If it%26#039;s more convenient for you, it%26#039;s a must. The important thing is to get the cardio into your exercise plan. After all, it%26#039;s the most beneficial exercise for your heart, lungs, blood vessels, and skin. YOGA

Yoga%26#039;s fundamentals are sourced to various ancient texts, among them Patanjali%26#039;s Yoga Sutras, The Bhagavad Gita, Hatha Yoga Pradipika.

Yoga incorporates sustained mental focus, physical postures and breathing techniques to get the body and mind functioning perfectly. Regular practice allows the practitioner to transcend attachment to his body and mind, allowing his perfect true nature -- divine consciousness -- to fully emerge, so he might become one with it

There are as many styles and sequences of yoga posture practice as there are gurus. Among the more famous currently:

1. K. Patabhi Jois -- athletic sequences combining yoga postures and gymnastic movements. Called %26quot;ashtanga,%26quot; which refers to the eight steps of yoga in the Yoga Sutras, so really any yoga practice combining yoga posture, breathing and meditation can accurately be described as ashtanga. (Beryl Bender Berch borrowed Jois%26#039; style and sold it to the west as %26quot;Power Yoga.%26quot;)

2. B.K.S. Iyengar -- precise, sustained poses, using bolsters and props if required. Can be strenuoous, or very gentle for elderly practice and like physical therapy. Iyengar and Jois had the same guru.

3. Satchidananda (%26quot;the Woodstock swami%26quot;) -- a sequence of still poses interspersed with complete stillness in a %26quot;corpse%26quot; pose. Known as %26quot;Integral%26quot; yoga, combining the paths to self-realization expounded upon by 20th C. yoga philosopher Sri Aurobindo:

i. Raja, or Hatha Yoga: postures, breathing, meditation

ii. Bhakti Yoga: devotion to a concept of divine consciousness such as a deity, like the %26quot;Hare Krishna%26#039;s%26quot; for example

iii. Karma Yoga: selfless action, dissolving ego

iv. Jnana Yoga: using philosophy/science to distinguish between what is real and what is illusion.

4. Sivananda/Vishnu-Devananda - see above. Sivananda was guru to both Vishnu-Devananda and Satchidananda. Sivananda organization books are very good, and include endless possible variations in the postire sequences, along with proper yoga diet (balanced vegetarian with dairy).

5. Bikram Choudhury - a set sequence practiced in 105 degree heat, devised by a champion bodybuilder from India who settled in Beverly Hills. A team of lawyers protects his various copyrights. (Raquel Welch borrowed Bikram%26#039;s style for a 1970s exercise video.)

All of the above offer rigorous teacher training certification programs recognized internationally.

6. Beware of a class combining the word %26quot;Yoga%26quot; with another word, and sticks a trademark symbol next to it. It%26#039;s a marketing scheme, offering teacher certifications after a quickie weekend of expensive dumb-downed %26quot;training,%26quot; with predictable results.

PILATES

My shorthand for Pilates is %26quot;yoga with more ab work%26quot; but it%26#039;s really more than that.

According to legend, Joe Pilates was a sickly 19th C. German child who read everything he could on physical fitness: calisthenics, yoga postures, boxing, martial arts, body building, etc. He combined it all into a personal workout which made him something of a perfect athlete by age 14.

He moved to London in 1912 and became a boxer, gymnast and circus performer, and gave self-defense classes to Scotland Yard detectives. He began his overall training program while teaching fellow inmates in the internment camp he was placed in during WWI.

He moved to New York in 1925 and taught classes in his codified system called %26quot;Contrology.%26quot; Precision, focus, control, flow, deep breathing are all important components. The professional dance world discovered him, and all manner of dance warmups and strengthening exercises were added to the mix. There are Pilates mat classes which is just you and the mat, and Pilates Refomer, done on a contraption with ropes and pullies attached.

Beware - nobody owns the term %26quot;Pilates.%26quot; It can be legally used by anybody to mean anything. Ask your instructor%26#039;s training background and certification authority.

HAVE FUN !!|||It depends what your expectation/results are.

There are many differnt types of Pilates and Yoga. Pilates type movements (which evolved from yoga movements) are now commonplace in rehab and used by elite athletes (core movements). Yoga may be difficult for those with joint pain, but can be done with modification.

Both are good for pain relief, although pilates is tailor made for my needs. Yoga causes some discomfort for me (long holds, more stress on joints, some inversions). I still do both, but have to do some pilates warm up before I do some yoga... lol...

Both are very good workouts - takes much more discipline than lifting weights and riding a bike for an hour. I stopped lifting weights (except dumbells and squats), but still hit the heavy bag - I feel much better now.|||They are totally different. Pilates is more about breathing and developing the core! Anyways, on more practical terms: Yes, yoga, the union is necessary for stress relief, achieving freedom from thoughts.

Yoga is union... of what with what? Within is an arrangement since birth: Kundalini (Divine Feminine) and Atma (Spirit) which are separate and need to unite to create the joy and bliss. The fallout of this yoga/union is bliss, relief from all concerns, pains and tensions.

The Kundalini needs to traverse the path of the central channel before touching the spirit which resides in the physical heart.

Yoga is the best and most time-tested path to physical and mental well-being known to mankind. While some people think of yoga simply as physical exercise, it is actually a complete system for overall health and well-being. It includes everything from physical postures, personal hygiene, and a healthy diet to premeditation, breathing, and relaxation techniques. The most advanced forms of meditation and self-realization are also a part of yoga. Wai Lana鈥檚 workouts focus on yoga鈥檚 physical techniques.

Why do yoga?

Like many forms of exercise, yoga asanas effectively stretch and strengthen your body. The greatest benefits of yoga asanas, however, come from their profound effects on the internal systems of the body. By bending, stretching, twisting, and flexing in the various postures, you bathe your internal organs with oxygenated blood and prana, also known as life force energy or chi. Yoga asanas soothe and tone your nerves and regulate the endocrine system, which is responsible for the production of hormones鈥攐ne of the keys to both physical and mental health. They also improve digestion and elimination, strengthen the respiratory system, and tone the reproductive organs. Although yoga techniques like asanas, breathing, and relaxation are extremely effective in relieving stress, it is Yoga Sound meditation that relieves deep-seated stress and anxiety, enabling you to experience yoga%26#039;s greatest gifts: spiritual happiness and inner peace.

Wai Lana

It would be difficult, if not impossible, to find anyone who has had as much influence as Wai Lana in increasing the worldwide appreciation of the beauty and benefits of the ancient art of yoga. Wai Lana%26#039;s internationally aired TV series attracts a huge audience and has played a significant part in the skyrocketing popularity of yoga. Click here to read Wai Lana鈥檚 biography.

What is Pilates?

Derived from ancient yoga asanas, the Pilates exercise system was formulated by Joseph Pilates over 80 years ago for more specific and limited purposes. Although Pilates is not a complete balanced or holistic exercise and health system, it is quite useful. Pilates focuses mainly on cultivating core strength in the body and lengthening the spine. Practiced for decades by dancers, Pilates has become popular in recent years for its largely aesthetic body sculpting effect. Pilates can be a valuable tool for enhancing strength, definition, and good posture in partnership with Wai Lana Yoga. Click here to explore Wai Lana%26#039;s Pilates Yoga line of products

Guidelines for yoga and Pilates practice:

鈥?Yoga postures, especially inversions and those that compress the abdomen, should not be done on a full stomach. Listen to your body鈥攊f you practice too soon after eating or drinking, certain poses will feel uncomfortable.

鈥?It鈥檚 best to practice yoga asanas barefoot, using a yoga mat or nonslip surface for standing poses. A mat, rug, or folded yoga blanket will provide firm padding for other asanas.

鈥?Wear comfortable clothing, something that allows you to move freely.

鈥?Ideally, the room should be well ventilated. Have enough space to extend your arms and legs in all directions without hitting anything.
